Electronic discussion lists are an excellent way to network with colleagues and quickly learn about the latest assessment practices. The following lists discuss issues relevant to higher education assessment practitioners. The lists are predominantly U.S. based and no guarantees are given as to usefulness :

 

ACSOFT-L - academic software development discussion.

AREA-D discusses issues in measurement and research methodology and it is sponsored by Division D of the American Educational Research Association. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@ASU.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUB AERA-D

AERA-J discusses issues in postsecondary education and it is sponsored by Division J of the American Educational Research Association. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@ASU.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUB AERA-J

ARN-L was created to give parents, educators, civil rights activists and other community advocates a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences about implementing assessment reform. It is administered by the Assessment Reform Network, a project of the National Center for Fair and Open Testing (FairTest). To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@LISTS.CUA.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUB ARN-L.

Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) - AECT member's listservs. Requires membership.

Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI) - for contributing information, ideas, and comments related to music technology as well as for seeking help and information on the far-reaching topics which the organization and its members cover.

Connected Teacher (CRC) - maintained by ClassRoom connect, intended for K-12 instructors using the Internet in classrooms.

CyberPhilosphy (CYBERPHIL) - aim of this list is to foster and encourage collaborative discussion, research and exploration of the significant impact of the growth of educational, informational and recreational technology upon the modern world.

ED-SOFTWARE - issues related to the use of educational software applications.

Ed Tech ThinkTank - open to all those interested in sharing and developing resources dealing with educational technology.

EdNet - forum for the discussion of educational uses of the Internet and issues surrounding educational uses of computers.

EDTech - brings together students, faculty, and interested others in the field of educational technology to share ideas and information. There are more than 3500 subscribers from about 50 countries on the EDTECH list.

EVALTALK discusses evaluation and associated issues; many of the threads are relevant to assessment practitioners. Although sponsored by the American Evaluation Association, the list is open for use by anyone. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@UA1VM.UA.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUBSCRIBE EVALTALK YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLAST NAME (replacing YOURFIRSTNAME and YOURLASTNAME with your first and last names).

InfoBits - an electronic service of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Academic & Technology Networks' Center for Instructional Technology. Each month the CIT's Information Resources Consultant monitors and selects from a number of information and instructional technology sources that come to her attention and provides brief notes for electronic dissemination to educators.

Innovative Teaching Newsletter - designed to keep teachers up to date with Internet resources on a weekly topic.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Special Interest Groups - links to a variety of groups related to technology and education.

Instructional Technology Forum (ITFORUM) - instructional technology discussion.

LRNASST exchanges ideas and experiences among learning assistance professionals, including some assessment matters. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUB LRNASST

PORTFOLIO-L discusses portfolios. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@HENSON.CC.KZOO.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUBSCRIBE PORTFOLIO-L

QUALRS-L discusses qualitative research issues. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUBSCRIBE QUALRS-L

RETENTION-L discusses higher education retention issues. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@ALBIE.WCUPA.EDU with the following command in the body of the message: SUB RETENTION-L

Teaching Multimedia (TeachMedia) - for teachers teaching multimedia courses in the K-12 and ESL arena.

Teaching, Learning, and Technology (TSLT-SWG) - moderated electronic discussion group focused on issues of teaching, learning, technology and educational change. Some 5,000+ faculty, campus administrators, technology professionals, librarians, corporate officials, and others currently subscribe.  

TESTBUILD-L - The major focus of this list is on practical matters related to constructing / administering / improving the quality of A) cognitive types of instruments such as classroom tests, B) affective attitude scales, and C) opinion surveys.

WebTalk - integrating the World Wide Web into curricula discussion. Under the Tech Center heading.

WWWEDU - the Internet's largest and longest-running forum on the use of the World Wide Web in education.
